GOSHAWK 11. LUGGAGE GRID. X3524

We send herewith N.sch. 1335 shewing some modifications to the luggage grid suggested by Mr. Royce to improve the manufacture. In spite of the low price quoted for the original grid it was thought that the solid sheet metal bar forming the rear half of the grid must be expensive to produce, and so Mr. Royce suggests that it should be pieced up, the sides being sheet metal and the rear part strip.

We have also increased the length of the turned over foot on the cross bars, and have increased the diameter of the body protecting tube at the front end of the grid.

On the sample grid sent down here it was observed that the metal was very flexible and would take a permanent set with very slight pressure. We should therefore like the metal to be heat treated in future though the material may remain mild steel.

Mr. Royce would like the diagonal steadies included, though if it is impossible to add them on to the first few cars, from the feel of the grid down here it would seem that it will be reasonably steady without them.

We suggest that one of these should be made as soon as possible and subjected to severe tests and that this grid can then be used to fulfil sales orders.
