were rejected on account of indifferent bedding which could not be corrected by lapping and for excessive backlash which gave rise to gear rattle at certain speeds. This axle was not examined when the chassis came in for fitting the large bore unit, but the original setting of .008 backlash (equivalent to .010 at the propeller shaft bolt centre) was etched on the wheel and the .010 increase in backlash previously mentioned may therefore be taken to represent wear on the gear teeth since both thrust bearings are perfectly sound. Pinion and wheel were checked for hardness and each gave figures within the range specified but a file test showed the actual surface to be relatively soft and this presumably accounts for the wear which has taken place on the teeth. Differential Casings GB.610-11 - signs of fidgetting on joint facings around studs, axle shaft bearings lightly scored and thrust washers show light wear and scoring. Cage of roller bearing in R.H. differential box clogged with deposit. Trunnion GB.605. Hard bedding on section locating in differential casing. Bearing Housing Cover. GB.2018 Picking up in bore. Pinion Driving Flange. GB.585. Picking upon acme thread and also slight signs of fidgetting in the bore. Axle Shafts GB.13789. ) Centre Casing. GB.1721. ) Condition Good Axle Tubes. GB.2033/4. ) BALL BEARINGS. ) Rear Brakes. Brake Drums - lightly scored on friction face but otherwise in good condition. ---------- RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} | ||
