4704 X7370 HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.20.2.34. GRY{Shadwell Grylls} To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from HDY.{William Hardy} c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Par. HMG. P.2. B.M.2nd Gearbox. As we wish this box to be as little experimental as possible, we have decided not to use the F.{Mr Friese} type roller bearings for the centre bearings but to have the present ball bearing on the 3rd motion shaft and a standard roller bearing on the layshaft. We show the alterations which are necessary on N. Sch. 3984 herewith and it will be seen that by shortening the boss of the 1st speed wheel on the forward side we have avoided any increase in the length of the box. We now think that the F.{Mr Friese} type bearings may prove to be unsatisfactory when loaded to the full capacity of the rollers owing to reduced area of contact with the shaft, and, more important still, to reduced grip on the shaft for a given expansion of the diameter of the race due to reduced section of the inner race, compared with a standard bearing.
