Dear Mr. Bailey, When I came to see you on Monday, I was anxious to say that I had eliminated the Squeak which even oil would not cure, in my clutch. The same lining has been on eight years - Scandinavian - and this experience compares with our own. It has always seemed very strange to me that we have never known of more than one case where cotton lining has burnt out in a cone clutch; but I have had the daily annoyance when changing speed, coming out of my garage with a slight incline, or reversing or letting in the first speed, of a very jerky and very noisy clutch - the only imperfection on the car which is part of my daily life - eight years of delightful motoring because of a perfect machine, with the exception named. My people here have often suggested why not change the clutch for our standard FERODO BONDED ASBESTOS, but I have always replied that it was perhaps one of those clutches that could not be cured, and if the Rolls Royce people have not discovered a remedy, beyond the oil, which merely mitigates it occasionally, I felt it was more or less hopeless. My surprise, therefore, was very great indeed when I found that I could back out of my stable without the least jerk, and I could start up on an incline on top gear. Now I have a clutch that is next door to my great preference - a plate clutch. I have not been able to make any noises with it yet. The reason why I came down so soon was because it had only been fitted on 48 hours and was, therefore, at its worst period. My clutch requires no oil, and I am pleased to say that two of your people tried it. Five of my partners possess your 40-50 car, and we have often compared notes about the squeak, which I have heard in several towns, especially in London, when passing your cars. I am very happy to think that I can provide you with a remedy, and I hope you will make some | ||
