Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr.R.Matthews. We would acknowledge receipt of your communication of the 23rd, requesting us to manufacture fifty Compression Rings to sizes given suitable for 3½" diameter bores. The rings you require appear to be identical with those we supplied to you in response to your request of July 3rd, 1936, when we manufactured forty rings of three different types, of which this present type was one. They were not supplied, of course, at that time with the taper periphery. In this connection, we propose to make the periphery similar to the "Merlin" ring which we manufacture for you, which you will remember has a .020" wide land before the taper commences. This is very desirable for two reasons, the first being that it gives visual proof of the accuracy and consistency of the taper, and the second being that it avoids marking the side of the ring in any way in order to indicate the direction of the taper.
