CHASSIS. ---------- X7771 X7230 We have received your reports of Thursday last and the one of the 13.7.29. I have read your comments with regard to the axle with interest, because I got the impression that 22 EX. car with its own axle is very much better than I thought it was and also as you are aware, 19 EX. car is very good for steering so that at the moment our worries on the steering are considerably reduced. We have been carrying on a number of further tests on S.S. cars and have come to the conclusion that there are two entrrely separate noises which at the moment are worrying us. This has been arrived at after careful comparisons with 9 EX., 12 EX., and 14 EX. The noise which we get up to 45 to 50 miles per hour on top gear we do not believe is in any way connected with the roar we get at higher speeds. We have tried one car with a lower compression ratio. This makes a very distinct improvement in the smoothness and silence of the car up to 50 miles per hour.
