X3387 March 23, 1918. Na{Mr Nadin}3/K23318. TO MR. HALL FROM Na.{Mr Nadin} Copies to: Mr. Ormald Mr. Whitehead Mr. Hives We have heard some rumors here that the crankshafts made by Wyman & Gordon, Worcester Massachusetts, are giving a good deal of trouble in England, due to cracks or hair lines. I can scarcely believe this is true and wish to ask if you will make some enquiries among people who have obtained shafts from the firm mentioned. One large buyer of these drop forged shafts is the Daimler Company of Coventry. I think you will find The Daimler Company willing to give you any information they can on this score. You might also enquire from the Air Board for the names of some other people who are obtaining shafts from this source. Will you also please ascertain whether there are any recorded failures of crankshafts, which have been directly traced to hair lines or cracks We regard the matter as important, and should be glad if you could find time to immediately investigate the matter.
