OYS.R.11.11.27 November 11th, 1927. Mr. T. S. Haldenby, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. (Copy for attention of Mr. Bailey) (Copy for attention of Mr. Hives) Dear Mr. Haldenby: RE: OIL PUMPS Referring to my letters of September 1st and September 6th, dealing with the Hoke methods of gear lapping and in particular with the type of oil pump gears, we recently wrote to the Pratt and Whitney Company asking whether they had in stock gears or means of producing gears which would be suitable for use in the Phantom oil pump. They reply in part as follows: "We will be glad to design a suitable experimental cutter for your use which would fit our Maag gear shaper. If the gears cut meet with your approval, a similar hob could be made which would enable you to hob the gears satisfactorily yourselves. Our object in making the cutter to fit our Maag shaper would be simply because a rack form cutter is cheaper to produce, and we hardly think you would wish to go to the expense of a hob until you are satisfied that the form of tooth recommended would be satisfactory. "There would be more or less engineering connected with this work, and we estimate that the cost of the cutter with the necessary engineering would run about $125.00." We believe that it would be desirable to develop oil pump gears of this form, but under the circumstances we are unwilling to go to the expense of this experimental work ourselves and we, therefore, wonder whether you would send us an order to proceed with special gears of this form with a view to obtaining less noise and greater effiency in the present Phantom oil pump. If you think it desirable, perhaps you would refer this matter to Mr. Royce. Yours very truly, MO/R | ||
