BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} X8770 R1/M28.10.27. RE. PHANTOM ENGINE. X.8770 / X.8000 We contemplated two moves. We think this will be very expensive and delay lowering the chassis. To lower the chassis is increasingly urgent. Therefore we now want to make a single move as regards the engine only. The reason why our two moves were suggested was to save time and use the present patterns, etc. Now the complete move is what we have in hand, plus an inch lower joint, and the accessory units changed over to the opposite sides (like the 20 HP.), the chief difficulty being caused by having the exhaust on the same side as the carb., which embarasses many things, such as the starter motor, vacuum tank, and front axle control (hydraulic). We shall therefore be sending you further instructions regarding the crankchamber, but we think they will not delay the work more than a week or so, as much can go in parallel.
