It should be added that local inertia torques in 8 cyl. engines are high as in the 6 cyl. engine. But 8 cyl. crankshafts are always stiffer than 6 cyl. ones for the same torsional period, due to being longer. This may be a cause of their greater overall smoothness, since local distortion will be less.
