X7772- AS To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Cg. Copy to Wox. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re American Phantom. SgS/225.10.29 My dear R.{Sir Henry Royce}, You will remember that Oy. mentioned that the springing of the Phantom in America was considerably better than on the English Phantom. Our Paris Office were recently able to get hold of an American Phantom and at our request they have made a careful test with a view to comparing the two products. The following is an extract from their report which I thought you would be interested to see: "The American is superior to our Phantom I in acceleration and springing, both these features being remarkably good. "Brakes similar, the American being rather on the spongy side, but not less effective ultimately. "Steering. I prefer Phantom I, probably due to the larger wheel with smaller rim. "Gear box. The American is below our standard. "Power. There appears to be very little difference. The lower gear of the American gives one an impression of violent get away, but I think at speeds above 50 m.p.h. our Phantom I would make up for what she undoubtedly lacks in the lower speed range. "General. Considering the "ensemble", especially the engine, I think our product is quieter at cruising speeds. One feels a fussiness with the American which really is only consistent with the increased engine revs." Yours very sincerely, (Sgd) A.F.Sidgreaves | ||
