High oil consumption due to a crankshaft leak, proposing to revert to a previous, more reliable oil retaining design.

With reference to SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}3/E4.1.29, the high oil consumption is due to a leak from the rear end bearing of the crankshaft.
We have altered the design of the oil retaining device on the SS.{S. Smith} for simplicity. This is not a success apparently and that is why we have the oil leak. It is perfectly simple to go back to our present method of retaining the oil on the Phantom which gives no trouble. It does not mean any alteration to the top or bottom half of the crankcase of any magnitude, and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} is already designing the necessary bits.
