F.X. - Camshafts. Sec:4170. With reference to Mr Royce's proposal that we should try new camshafts, with cams arranged for longer duration of exhaust opening, we find that we can very nearly obtain the timing suggested by R.{Sir Henry Royce} by using Cam Form E.28052 for the Exhaust and Cam Form E.28237 for the Inlet. We hand you herewith the following blueprints shewing camshafts using the cam forms referred to above:- E.28336 - Camshaft "A" Unit. E.28337 - Camshaft "B" Unit. To enable the experiment to be carried out as soon as possible, will you please produce these camshafts in 3½% nickel steel. I attach a sheet showing the timing diagrams with .010 clearance and .013 clearance, from which it will be noted that we have maintained the same overlap suggested by R.{Sir Henry Royce}, and the only difference we get is the exhaust opening position is 8° earlier. It is considered that the above will enable us to prove the new timing suggested by R.{Sir Henry Royce} satisfactory for practical purposes, without going to the expense of making new cam forms, at the present moment. Will RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} produce one set of camshafts to the above drawings. BY/Cgh.{W Clough} | ||
