SUMMER MEETING OF THE INSTITUTION OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERS IN GERMANY, JUNE, 1937.

Participation in this has proved of value not only because of what was seen and learned in Germany, but also because of the contacts made with other members of the Automobile industry of this country who were also taking part in the meeting.

One of the most impressive features was the general high level of organisation in the different factories visited. It is realised that good organisation is more obvious in a factory with a high production of any given type of article, and naturally the factories whose output was of this type were most impressive in their organisation - the Bosch and Opel factories particularly.

Conversation with one of Acheson's representatives on the trip yielded the information that assembly of parts with graphited oil, said to assist the running-in process, is now used by a number of manufacturers including Standard and Daimler.

An old established firm connected with the development of the internal combustion engine from the beginning, by virtue of their association with Otto, they now manufacture heavy oil engines almost exclusively, both for road transport and also in much larger sizes.

In the road transport range, common features of all engines are wet pressed-in cylinder liners, the bottom water joint being by two or three rubber rings, individual cylinder heads for each cylinder, and the use of pre-combustion chambers. As might be expected from this last feature, the fuel consumptions are not exceptionally good, the best being .43 to .44 lbs/B.H.P.hr. and the best B.M.E.P. being 108.5 lbs. per sq. in.
