HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS. Y235 We have been examining some of the glands on the hydraulic dampers on production. These appear to be very well made and a much better fit than we were able to produce experimentally. However they seem to be considerably harder than the original packing we produced. The objection to the harder packing is that the spring is unable to follow up any wear which takes place in the gland. We therefore propose to try out a stronger spring with the production packing and in addition with a standard spring with a softer packing on our next 10,000 miles test car. We should be obliged if you could let us have one or two packings [strikethrough]production[/strikethrough] produced on the production press of this material so that we can put them through an endurance test. We feel we cannot do too much work on the gland of the damper as this is the one point where trouble is always likely to occur.
