when they have had security bolts fitted. They have communicated with the Dunlop people who have proved that the reason the tyres were coming off was because the tubes were being chafed by the security bolts becoming punctured. They have recommended to the customer that he did away with the security bolts, and they claim that since then, there has been no further trouble.

We have carried out recently a few tests with and without security bolts and find that security bolts are no guarantee as regards the tyre not coming off the rim. In some cases we have had the tyre come off with the security bolts fitted and have stayed on without them, and vice-versa. On the average we would say they have a slight delaying effect to the tyre coming off.

Undoubtedly the right way out of this position is to go for the straight-sided tyres. In the meantime we consider we ought to modify our policy as regards dealing with customers and we think that as the tyres are a consumable part of the car i.e., no matter what tyres we fit they will have to be replaced after a period, we ought to fix the responsibility of the tyres on to the tyre makers.

We therefore recommend that we use no more security bolts with cord tyres.

We attach copy of a letter from the Dunlop Tyre Co. dated 26th.July.1922.
