Over-running noise caused by the coupling between the engine and the gear box. ---------------------------------------- I am not satisfied that this coupling is the best that can be made. There is no doubt that one can be treated in the same way as we treat the universal joint inside the sphere. The other end might be tested by abandoning the square blocks and using a circular roller fitted with a roller or ball bearing on the pin. I think a roller bearing would be more suitable and this could have the small brass catch to keep the rollers square on the shaft. The whole thing would be increased in diameter but might be tested with smaller dimensions than we thought correct, to see whether the arrangement would show any signs of weakness. With such an arrangement the joint would have a better chance of working in both directions with the same amount of freedom, whereas at present where is considerable friction in one direction, and at right angles to that direction, very little friction. In conjunction with this over-running noise, there may be a large difference between the retarding noise X634 | ||
