have been entirely overcome and the cylinder wear figures obtained in service do indicate that this treatment for cylinder blocks is going to be a very valuable one indeed. We have an open mind with regard to its application to C.I. engines, but here again, it may be in certain cases that the chrome hardening treatment will also be of value on this type of engine.

Our interest in this particular process is such that we are preparing at the present time a rotating jig which is capable of chromium plating liners for use in our current range of engines, and as the jig is being designed to take a cylinder liner suitable for use in an engine 3½" bore x 5" stroke, it would appear that we can satisfactorily deal with a number of liners suitable for an engine 3½" bore x 4½" stroke, such as you mentioned to Mr. Markland. If you will let us have a drawing of the liner in question, we will investigate this in connection with our own jig and advise you as to when we would be able to complete the work for you.

When discussing this hard chromium plating process with Mr. Van der Horst some year or so ago he was of the opinion that the thin liner would be a difficult proposition to cater for, but we on our part do feel that unless we can so treat a cylinder liner the process is not going to be a very satisfactory one to deal with from the service point of view, and that is why it is our intention to concentrate on the plating of cylinder liners, rather than on the cylinder blocks direct.

I sincerely hope that this letter contains sufficient information for your requirements, but if there are any outstanding points, if you would be good enough to let me know what these are I will undertake to have them investigated immediately.
