x4634 Laboratory. Re Valve Steel (Silchrome). As the result of a number of Izod tests, I came to the conclusion that we were getting some variation due to small differences in the temperature of the test pieces. With a view to investigating the effect of temperature on the results obtained, bars of 2 steels (1) containing 1.35% silicon. (2) containing 3.90% silicon, were given a standard treatment and tested at the temperatures quoted in the following table :- Temperature oC. | 1.35% Silicon. Izod ft.lbs. | 3.90% Silicon. Izod ft.lbs. 10 | 4.0 | 1.4 30 | 9.0 | 1.4 50 | 17.2 | 2.8 70 | 24.0 | 5.0 These figures are very interesting and tend to indicate that the brittleness disappears rapidly, in the case of a low silicon material, with the raising of the temperature.
