GURX x4644 328 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from HDY.{William Hardy} c. W.R., R.Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} D.H. HHO. HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.12.7.34. SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. We are sending N. Sch.4132 herewith which shews various small modifications to the actuating gear for the second speed designed to reduce friction at the moment of synchronisation. We should like the first box that is made to be fitted with all of these, although subsequently we may delete such as prove to be unnecessary. With regard to the actuating pieces to N.Sch. 4050, which are no doubt already detailed, we should like these to be regarded as alternative experimental pieces. We should, however, in the case of these pieces like the needle roller bearing and the modified angular position of the lower half of the rocking lever as shewn on N. Sch.4132 to be incorporated. Will you also kindly instruct the splines, on the second motion shaft to be case hardened together with the bore of the 2nd speed S.M. sleeve which bears on these splines, as we wish to determine whether any reduction of the friction of this sleeve can be made in this way. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} is prepared to produce the experimental pieces with these features hardened. HDY.{William Hardy} | ||
