B80 1044 To Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/JMc.20.5.40. MODIFICATIONS TO THE 8-CYL. ENGINE TO GIVE IT "BENTLEY" CHARACTERISTICS. The induction system with three carburetters is a some-what undesirable complication compared with the Duplex Strom-berg arrangement particularly when the air silencer is taken into consideration. It does not give a better torque at low and middle speeds and the increase in top horse power is not very great. Its main attribute is that on the road it gives a better consumption than the Stromberg. A seperate report is attached shewing the fuel consump-tions taken on the road. (Whyman to supply). If S.U.'s complete the development of their new expand-ing carburetter, which requires no air silencer it should be utilised when making the scheme drawing. The complications of three carburetters is only justified because the 8-cyl. Bentley will, by its tax rating, necessarily be a very expensive and exclusive car.
