RE. BEVEL AND OTHER GEARS, ETC. X3612 / X492

Gears made in 5% case-hardened nickel steel should not require quenching more than once, this being the object in using this high content of nickel, and the resulting skin and core should be sufficiently fine and consistent to give a satisfactory gear, if the temperature is well chosen, as we understand is confirmed by the experience of the E.N.V. people, and RR. America. I have never desired more than one quenching with 5% C.H. nickel steel.

Mr. Hall should say to what temperature the steel should be heated, and whether the core, and also the skin resulting from the single quenching is in a satisfactory condition.

The great trouble and expense we have been to in using this material and in providing cold oil for quenching had for it's chief object satisfactory case hardening without distortion.
