GOSHAWK 11. DYNAMO DRIVE. X.4359

In reply to your EFC1/T9.12.21. We endeavoured to make this as near and simple as possible, but for 2 reasons we have to alter the design to a more complex, thorough, and self-fitting scheme:-

1. Difficulty of getting gear to mesh correctly.
2. EFC. reports that crack chamber oil mist gets into the dynamo and spoils running of brushes.

The faults with the simple and direct scheme are works complaints.

It is possible that we might drive this with an Oldham joint like the 40/50 Water Pump, but it would take up considerable end room, and might not be an entire success, so we are arranging it like the water pump drive on the other side i.e. hollow pinion shaft, with back axle type drive to fabric coupling on dynamo.

This will meet the 2 defects of the present and have the great advantage that the dynamo shaft can be of the simplest standard size and pattern.

We are proposing to still strap the dynamo against the crankchamber as originally, but its position need now only be approximately correct.

We hope this improved scheme will be ready this week; unfortunately many of us here have been laid up with severe colds hence the delay.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
