My dear Robotham, It is some little time since I wrote you on the subject of the Rolls-Royce box, and I would now inform you that it has been fitted to one of our test chassis with an 8.6 litre oil engine, and has given a remarkably good performance as regards gear changing. At the present time the vehicle is on road test, doing the usual number of service stops per mile, and we are keeping it like this for one week prior to arranging for some further tests to be carried out. OVERALL The only point arising out of this box is that the third speed ratio is too close to top, and when I was down at Derby you told me that you had got an arrangement out whereby the third speed could be made into an overdrive. Would it be possible to arrange for our present gearbox to be converted to this arrangement, because, if so, we could then have a flywheel range for the gearbox which, with a suitable re-arrangement of the axle ratio, would compare with the stepping in our own standard box, and would make it a more correct service test from our point of view than the arrangement as shown on your G.81777. You will probably like to have some information with regard to the type of clutch which has been utilised in the combination, and I am therefore enclosing an arrangement drawing of clutch to our type C.5. Should you be able to provide for this re-arrangement, I could either arrange for | ||
