Na{Mr Nadin}2/IB201113. Do not on the face of what we hear purchase the Avery Impact Testing Machine. The worst of Prof. Arnold's scheme is that it is not any use except accompanied by the static tests, which might not be convenient to do, and I think it would be quite worth while to see if we could get on approval a machine from the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Co., to see whether it would give us valuable and consistent information. It is exactly on the lines of the machine I started to scheme, when first I saw it described in the Engineering. I quite think Prof. Arnold's scheme excellent, but I fear we should never get double tests made of the pieces, i.e. both the static and bending test. Mr Nadin will see whether there is any foundation for my views. Anyway I think we ought to procure a machine either like Dr Stantón or Prof. Arnold's at once, since the simple Avery Machine is not considered worth having. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
