-5- | | Initial force in position of rest. | Force at position of entry | Final force in full engagement. | |---|---|---|---| | Z. spring | 5.94 | 6.41 | 8.03 | | Y. spring | 6.07 | 7.34 | 11.61 | The Test Dept. have pronounced the Y. spring as definitely better, but Z. is the actual present standard. Many observations on the operation of this starter system have been made on our laboratory crankcase rig, which rig has proved to be a very useful piece of test apparatus for the elucidation and demonstration of points of interest and difficulty which have been encountered in connection with that system. Push button operation is effected automatically and at the present moment, an endurance test of the standard system is proceeding, the number of starts being automatically recorded. Considerable criticism has been directed against this starter motor system by those concerned with the operation of the starter by those who have not become used to its peculiarities, and by others. This criticism falls under three heads :- (1) There is no maximum torque device as a protection against back fire with motor in engagement as there was on the Phantom. This was referred to in | ||
