HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AJL1/AML.10.29. WHEEL ARCH CLEARANCES - W.J. SERIES. We have gone into the question of wheel arch clearances on our experimental Phantom II cars. Both 18-EX and 22-EX were reported to be fouling, tyre or brake drum, whilst in France on 10,000 mile tests. Presumably this was overlooked partly to our having had (at that time) greater body work troubles to contend with and partly because we knew that our bodies were not made to our drawing clearances in many respects. 20-EX has been running about here for a long time and no fouling has taken place, the wheel arch clearances are as near as possible to the dimensions called for on the original subframe drawing. 19-EX also has given no trouble, yet the wheel arch clearances are actually less than given on the print. Obviously these cars have not experienced the conditions necessary to cause bumping during their normal running. Rolling either of these cars produces fouling of the brake drum dust cover against the wheel arch. The rolling test is obviously no use on Phantom II cars, we have not been able to make contact with the buffers, before this occurs, the opposite rear wheel leaves the ground. Our tests confirm Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}'s remarks viz. that the conditions for bumping are distinctly worse when the | ||
