re VALVE SPRINGS.

We attach copy of Fn23/G.20.3.28. received from our Bombay Depot in regard to the question of removing valve springs.

The tool which we at present include in the kit can only be used when the cylinder head has been dismantled from the engine, but the Repair Department have tools for changing the springs with the cylinder heads in position, and we would like to have your opinion as to whether it is considered that tools similar to what they have in the Repair Department should be issued with all tool kits or whether they should be supplied only with chassis being sent out to India, and certain other foreign countries. The tools which the Repair Department are using are similar to the one which was made in the Experimental Department some time ago.

It would appear wrong to expect customers to remove cylinder heads when a valve spring has broken, and when the matter was taken up with WW. some considerable time ago they expressed the view that it did not seem worth while going to the expense of supplying a special tool in each kit, as they considered that valve spring breakages would be very few indeed.
/had However, we have/a number of breakages, both on the 20 HP. and 40/50 HP. chassis, and the special tool should not cost very much more than the one which we at present include in the kit. The question of extra cost will of course be taken up with Sales Dept., but we would like your opinion in the first place.
