It would appear, from the suggestions on the leaflet, that some anodic oxidation process is used (there is a variety of solutions and methods for this operation).
We have previously found on the friction tester that the C.O.3 (Bengough's) method is inclined to encourage picking up and scoring rather than prevent it.
