X1588. Sèvres Copy to Mr Hives Ps20/RJ.18/7/30. Re: "Esso" and Rolls-Royce cars "Esso" is a mixture of benzol and petrol on an approx. ratio of 20 to 80. There may be other ingredients but we doubt it. It compares with "Ethyl" in England. The Standard Oil Company have asked us to say that we have tried it and that we have no objection to the use of this super-fuel on Rolls-Royce cars. Before replying, I put the matter before you and, if agreed, I suggest we say the following:- "We have not experimented with "Esso", but in "one or two instances, we have tried it with favourable "results. "without ascertaining if the mixture has any "detrimental effects on the engine, or that there "is an improvement or otherwise in fuel consumption, "we have found that under certain conditions the "running of the engine is sweeter, especially in "cases where an engine is partially carboned up "and pre-ignition is apparent with ordinary petrol." An early reply will oblige. Ps. RJ P.S Possibly you would prefer to say nothing Co HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} [Stamp 1]: RECEIVED JUN 20 1930 HC [Stamp 2]: Ws 20 JUN 1930 RECEIVED | ||
