1124? EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}21/JH. 21st. February. 1939. Wing Commander Helmore, Engineering Laboratory, CAMBRIDGE. Dear Sirs, Further to our letter ref. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}6/R.{Sir Henry Royce} dated 28th. October, 1938. We are very interested to know how your tests are progressing with regard to the nine sample rings of material sent to you in connection with corrosion tests. We would be very much obliged if you could advise us of the possible date of completion of these tests, also the writer would like to take advantage of your invitation to visit your Laboratory. With reference to your paper on 'Experiments on corrosive wear of lubricated surfaces', you have inferred that if the right number of starts and stops were included in a certain period of running, the maximum amount of wear both frictional and corrosive, would be obtained. It also being assumed of cause that it would be necessary for the stops to be of a certain duration and temperature conditions to be most suitable to give the desired result. We would very much appreciate any further knowledge you have on this point, as we see the possibility of arriving at a set of conditions which would assist in an attempt to accelerate 'wear tests'. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
