We have looked into the question of fitting on aluminium (sandcast) cover plate on Phantom III. crankcases to replace the oil cooler, and give below figures for the reduction in factory cost of engines built in this manner :- £. s. d.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} Cost of cooler complete to LOP.E.87990.................. 1 13 7 (Reduced from £1.16.10d., due to reduction in assembly time, 21.1.38) Cost of oil pipe, E,87744.... 5 4 ----------------------- 1 18 11 Less cost of Blanking Plate.. 2 10 ----------------------- Total saving............... 1 16 1 ----------------------- In the final design FCD.296, this saving rises to £2.7.0d., due to the simplification of crankcase coring and machining. The position of oil coolers is being investigated so that we may determine the amount of scrap involved if it is decided to delete the cooler at 101 in 'D' series. RHC{R. H.
