22/4/32 X788. EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 5/H22.4.32. Wos. c. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} PN. {Mr Northey} Sps. Mr. Lillie Hall. Mlr. re. PHANTOM II. MAXIMUM SPEEDS. In view of the controversy re loss in speed in the later type Phantom II. cars, tests were taken yesterday on Brooklands Track on two cars, as follows:- 62-JS. {Mr Johnson's Secretary} Standard Phantom II., normal compression, no exhaust cutout. Diamond mounted type engine - carburetter inlet silencer fitted. Barker Sedanca De Ville body fitted. Average max.speeds timed for one lap:- (a) Standard (as above)-73.78 m.p.h. (b) With inlet silencer removed (internal fittings) 74.78 m.p.h. 72-JS. {Mr Johnson's Secretary} Phantom II. Continental model, as above except high compression head and exhaust cut-out fitted. Thrupp & Maberly - close coupled Coupe body. Average max.speeds timed for one lap:- (a) Inlet silencer fitted and cut-out closed 75.8 m.phh (b) Ditto, exhaust cut-out open - 78.7 m.p.h. (c) Inlet silencer removed - cut-out closed - 76.62 m.p.h (d) Ditto. cut-out open - 79.55 m.p.h. We are looking up records we may have of earlier Phantom II. cars for lap speeds. It is futile comparing performances on different days over one mile or ½ mile straight, owing to the influence of windage. During the above tests a strong south wind prevailed with occasional heavy showers. The speedometers appeared fairly accurate, and on the straight one mile stretch speeds dropped to 70 m.p.h. whereas on other parts of the track (wind to rear of car) 89 m.p.h. was shown on the speedometer. The effect of the inlet silencer and exhaust cut-out as shown by the above must be considered when comparing speed performances. EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} | ||
