A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Mr. Robotham, During one of my recent visits to Derby, some discussion took place on the subject of aluminium alloy cylinder heads. I believe I am correct in stating that where this type of head is utilised on your productions you employ valve seats of the screwed-in type, manufactured from one of the alloy bronzes. We have recently struck a rather big trouble in a similar type of head, whereby when the valve seats are screwed-in the metal between the valve seats appears to lift and actually starts a crack at the base of the threaded portion. I would very much appreciate hearing whether you yourselves have at any time experienced this trouble, and, if so, whether you were able to satisfactorily to overcome such a difficulty. Yours faithfully, M Pilkington | ||
