RE STEERING FAILURES ON R.R. CARS.
------------------------------------

With regard to our cars which are now in use extensively at the Front, we find that one of the most serious troubles, and one which has been confirmed by our repairs at the Works, is that the cross steering tube end socket nuts, F.3412, work loose on the threads, and the whole "work" appears to be transferred on to the locking pin, which has been in several cases very nearly worn through.

This has also been brought to our attention very emphatically by our Depot at Paris.

The above trouble appears to have been brought to our notice in the first place by Capt. Burt. An improved scheme has been designed, and 25 sets of parts have been instructed in the works, which can be supplied for fitting on cars at the Front. It is very apparent, however, that this failure is one which should be tackled as a general job, and that all cars with this type of steering tube fitted should have some improved scheme fixed, and be treated in the same way as the pivot job, etc.

It is important, therefore, that this job should be standardised so that we can arrange for parts to be made up and supplied to Depots, where they can be applied to cars with which they come in contact.

Will Mr. Hives try a set on 7-CA and report as quickly
