To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Copy to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} HDY.{William Hardy} E.1/MN.14.9.35. x328 SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. In connection with the use of the 45° angle coarse gears on the SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox, we should like some intensive testing done to make sure that the journal bearings are going to stand up to the end load. This end load with the 45° gears combined with the pumping of the transmission is well above the maximum rating of the bearings, but as the rating would be only exceeded for very short periods we think the bearing should be satisfactory. The point, however, is that we ought to make sure of this now as it would be extremely difficult to increase the size of this bearing and would necessitate lengthening the box.
