- 8 - REAR AXLE AND BRAKES LOP.GB.619 - 11 X 43 RATIO; BRAKES LOP. G.101170 N.S. 3822. Bevel Wheel and pinion produced by RR. The rear axle shows no mechanical weakness in the tubes and box. No oil has got down the driving shafts. A slight leak developed from the housing of the pinion but not sufficient to cause loss of oil from the axle box. It has not been necessary to add any oil during the mileage. Mobiloil EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} used. An over run period of noise developed between 50 and 40 M.P.H. making the axle not up to standard production. It remains good on the forward drive. BRAKES The brakes have been effecient and are in an excellent condition. The drum surfaces are smooth and polished The same features applies to the brakes re. water and dirt entering as with the front brakes, with the addition that the hand brake shoes are covered with sludge and are not in such a good condition. The wear of the brakes was 5 turns of the cam adjustment. PETROL TANK LOP.FB.374. - Modificstion toBREATHER pipe to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/LID.{A. J. Lidsey} and surging baffle fitted to prevent erratic working of the petrol pump when cornering and on reserve of petrol. The breather pipe has definately overcome the smell of petrol entering the body, with a full tank. It has not overcome and we do not believe intended the difficulty of filling the last two gallons. The car has still to be rocked to get the two gallons in the tank, or it becomes air locked. The feed from the petrol pump has to be checked for the last four gallons or petrol gushes out of the filler pipe. The baffle to prevent erratic working of the petrol pumps when petrol is low in the tank appears to have overcome that trouble. We have run down to the last drop in the tank without noticing any erratic action of the pumps. FRONT ROAD SPRINGS LOP.FB.241. Woodhead 650 lbs REAR ROAD SPRINGS LOP.FB.242. Woodhead 825 lbs.
