x1256 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}18/KW. 26th August, 1936. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Howlett Esq., Messrs. Wellworthy Ltd., Lymington, Hants. Dear Mr. Howlett, Thank you for your letter of the 24th August. We are in the middle of finding out how little we really know about oil consumption. To get reliable results every tests has to be confirmed a number of time. Each test necessitates 4 hours' continuous high speed running on the bed. The engine wear and tear is considerable. We have an enormous number of ring and piston combinations to try, quite apart from varying oil pressures, cylinder finish, varying oil viscosities, and piston design. We note the points you raise and will include them in our investigations. As soon as we really know what we are talking about we shall be happy to discuss results with you. We shall try and treat the Simplex ring as a separate issue, and should have some results before very long on this. Yours sincerely, | ||
