To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} RG.{Mr Rowledge} BY c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RE. PIPE UNIONS. X, 2170 X, 8180 I think these are as perfect as we know how to make them, and the minimum weight and cost of materials. They are a distinct advance on the more usual standard and will in time become universal. A set should be made and tested by an expert mechanic, and used as a model to make a stock for use throughout the Works - aero, car, and all other work where such fittings are wanted. All others should be cancelled. I am not sure that it is necessary to cut a clearing groove for the end of the screwing where the main washer fits. Perhaps we can thread near enough to the shoulder, and the bolts would be countersunk. Regarding the pitch of the thread, the A.M. standards have a few erratic and illogical pitches, and we cannot follow these, therefore take no notice, but make our own standards, which only vary from those of the A.M. where theirs go wrong. I do not know what materials are to be used. They appear suitable for Delta, but perhaps drawn alum. bronze would be good. It is understood that we cancel all the locking pins which have proved more harm than good. Kindly push these forward so that our reputation can have the benefit of them as soon as ever possible.
