X7791 16.4.29. WATFORD EW6 MAGNETOS. X7792 Messrs. Kirby, Allen and North visited us today. Amongst other things the question of EW6 magnetos was discussed. Mr. Allen stated that they were producing an EW6 magneto with a better low speed performance, having reduced the resistance of the primary winding and increased the number of secondary turns slightly. In regard to the matter of tungsten points, he appeared to eschew this entirely. We put it to him that we required 60 extra range in these magnetos and he stated he thought this could be done. It was ultimately decided that they would send us six machines in which all these proposals were embodied simultaneously, these being for test on our experimental cars. The question of contact breaker ventilation and burning away of platinum points was also discussed and the position of the magneto on the engine in relation to the crankcase breather was shown to Mr. Allen. The contact breaker of the magneto on chassis 14-EX was removed for inspection and showed signs of burning away, a deposition of black platinum dust being found on the lever. Mr. Allen did not apparently think it could be accounted for by the breather, as breathing action was so small. It was arranged, however, that we would further watch the particular progress of this contact breaker. The magneto in question was fitted with one of their ventilated cam cage covers | ||
