With reference to the various correspondence that has been taking place regarding the above, especially with reference to the change of the end cover from case-hardened to aluminium, we have looked through the previous letters from Mr Royce and should like to say that though there appears to be something wrong with the upshot, we do not see how we can have acted otherwise than we did, since Mr Royce's R8/G15-3-20 contained an expressed instruction to us to pass his letter on to Messrs Lucas, but the trouble appears to have been that Messrs Lucas have taken out letter DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}3/CB16-3-20 to be an instruction to make the alterations on all production machines without an example for test having been made. This no doubt is due to the different procedure of Messrs Lucas as compared with ourselves, and somewhat due to Mr Royce insistance in his R8/G15320 with reference to our dealing with Messrs Lucas direct. Mr Bailey in his BY5/H19-4-20 instructs Messrs Lucas to deal with us in matters affecting design. directly

In future, in accordance with the practice that we are now following, we should not deal directly with Messrs Lucas or any outside firm supplying us with parts for production, except when we desire some special information, or wish for their criticism before passing on a design to the production department.

As regards this end cover being in aluminium or in cast iron, we suggest that the change back to cast iron should be proceeded with cautiously. We think that we ought to satisfy ourselves that cast iron is really more silent than aluminium before the machines are changed.
