Inspection request for B.III No.5 unit after a 15,000-mile test.

B.III NO.5 UNIT (8.B.V. 15,000 MILES).


Will you please carry out the following inspection of the above unit which is now stripped after 15,000 miles test.

(1) Crack test of
(a) Crankcase and lower half.
(b) Connecting rods.
(c) Valves.
(d) Pistons.
(e) Main bearing caps.

(2) Measurement of the following:-
(a) Crankshaft journals and pins.
(b) Main bearings (Vandervell) and big ends. (R.R. alloy) (Photographs).
(c) Cylinder bores and pistons.
(d) Rocker shaft and bushes (Vandervell).
(e) Valves and guides.
(f) Timing gears, particularly Attwater's camwheel.
(g) Tappets and tappet guides in crankcase.
(h) Main bearing housing crankcase bores.
(i) .4 Carbon steel push rods.


Other than the above a complete general report of the engine parts including the following special features to be taken

(a) Neuprene bushes under rocker nuts.
(b) Gaskoid rocker cover joint.
(c) General oil filter.

When the above report is to hand an assembly specification will be issued for fitment of this unit into 10.B.V.
