By, from Wd. {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} c.c to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Y4429 Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 14/NJ9.2.23. Firth's 40/50 H.P. Springs. In yours By4/F10.1.23 you remarked that Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} is afraid to recommend the adoption of Firth's springs at once, as the plates appear to be on the thick side and he is afraid squeaking may result. You added that he is therefore trying them out on the bumper and for this purpose he selected one set out of the three sets of sample springs sent in by Firths. I hope Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will report as soon as possible the result of the bumper test. With regard to the other two sets of springs, it was suggested that these be tried out on experimental cars and for this purpose Firths have been instructed to re-build the springs to the following poundages:- For one car - 1 Front Spring 900 lbs. 1 " " 950 " 1 Rear " 1900 " 1 " " 2000 " For the other car 1 Front Spring 900 lbs. 1 " " 950 " 1 Rear " 1700 " 1 " " 1800 " Firths have written that now the questions of the method of testing and determination of the poundage are settled, they find that they will only be able to utilise the main plates of these springs and will have to fit new leaves throughout. They are forthwith proceeding to re-build the two sets of springs and will send them in as soon as possible.
