Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}3/F13.2.20. X.3757 RE. DEVELOPED PISTON KNOCK ON CHASSIS 1.TW. With reference to the above new chassis delivered to London, which has developed a piston knock and which we heard when running at Conduit Street last Thursday, Mr. Archer now reports as follows:- "We have now dismantled this engine, and find that number 3 piston to all appearance was in quite good order. With the piston in the cylinder we could get in .008 round the skirt. Mr. Holgate opened out the skirt of this piston, re-erected the engine, and he has today given this chassis a good test and it is now O.K." We have written to Mr. Archer asking him whether he can account for this extra clearance, and whether the piston appears to be particularly weak, and to have collapsed. EP.{G.
