November 27th. 1913. Report on Bumping Test of Frame with box section front horns. X.711. The front horns of this frame are made of box section by acetylene welding plates on the inside of the side members. The plates extend to a point about 4" behind the front cross member which is in the usual standard position, but is shorter than standard as it butts up against the welded plate instead of going inside the channel as usual. Distance pieces are used inside the box section and the cross member bolts are carried right through to the outside of frame. Difficulty was experienced in making this frame and when finished it was not a nice job. It would not be possible to manufacture them as at present arranged. For instance the dumb iron cannot be replaced as it is imprisoned due to the shank tapering and becoming broader toward the end. The dumb iron has to be fixed before the plate is welded in. The welding makes a poor job and is not at all reliable. The joints could be broken in places by tapping same with a hammer. The off side top joint was cracked here and there before the tests were started. When running, the front horns appeared to be very rigid vertically but the movement sideways was still great. | ||
