(8) Before assembling the taper joints of the propeller shaft, the latter should be blocked with a large cork near the front end, to prevent transference of oil from the gear box to the back axle.

(9) Provide for the lubrication of the journal bearings, thrust bearing, and universal of the bevel pinion by using the pumping action of the rear thrust, and intermediate journal. This should be accomplished by using a thrust distance washer with an annular space turned on its outside surface, this distance piece and the bearing housing being perforated with holes, (as in sketch) so that oil pumped sideways by the journal, and radially by the thrust, will be fed through these holes into the torque tube where it will accumulate, to a sufficient depth to lubricate the required parts.

RETURN HOLES TO AXLE CASING
MAKE THIS CLEARANCE LARGE.

Overflow holes back to the axle casing should be provided in the diaphragm portion of the bearing housing, as illustrated, and a dowel pin should be provided in the flanged joint of the torque tube, so that this bearing housing will always be erected in the correct position.

OVERFLOW HOLES THUS ROUND TOP HALF OF HOUSING.

(10) The lubrication of the universal at the front end of the propeller shaft should be effected by the oil leakage from the gear box. The oil retaining thread on the main part of the universal thread should be cancelled and replaced by a plain diameter taper up to the universal teeth so that the oil delivered sideways by the ball bearing in the gear box will run along the plain
