(Handwritten note: Ackd 2/8/28) Dear Mr. Bentley, re. B.456. A.C. MOTOR. The ball bearings look alright for oiling, oil retaining, and end play, except minor hardly enough clearance, but apparently you must be able to reach the inner plates after the machine is together, so as to hold them up and turn them round for screws to enter - (this is the same as car dynamo and motor on RR. at present.) The terminals I think should be carried in a sheet of bakelite, but the contact not to depend upon the fixing - i.e. shrinkage of the bakelite. I think you should fix your bearing end plates by hexagon set screws with spring washers under head: apparently a slight modification to design to make more room for head and spanner, and easier facing. The stator securing endways is the chief feature that I fear we have not got a good scheme for, and the thin plates only for the teeth seem insufficient unless they were cemented together by bakelite varnish and heated hydraulic pressure. I do not like any of the schemes shewn. Will you kindly find out what your best competitors are doing, and your own further suggestions, if we can find one better than the competitors have. Regarding the squirrel cage machines, the substantial (heavy) rings at the end shew no sign of how they are made and supported. I will keep blueprint until I hear from you. From Aug. 1. to Aug. 10. my address will be: c/o Mr. Walter Aubin. Tydd. St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} Giles Fen. Wisbech. Cambs. Yours faithfully, F.H. Royce | ||
