Hallam - Head Repairs} c. to MP. X 7410 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/AWJ.31.5.30. X7410 Y5410 We went over the whole question of suspension with R.{Sir Henry Royce} last week. He appreciated our difficulties and appeared to be sympathetic to our requirements for weaker front springs. At the same time we pointed out to him that our present method of specifying the rear springs was leading us into a certain amount of trouble and that we should have to increase the buffer clearance slightly to avoid complaints. We consider, and Wm. and EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} are in agreement, that with our present lubricated rear springs the buffer clearance we should aim at with a normal load should be 3 3/4" + 1/2", while for cars for use on the Continent the minimum buffer clearance with normal passenger load and 1 cwt. of luggage should be 4". With reference to the lower rating front springs, W.W. agreed that they would design something to help us in this matter, but in the meantime lower rating front springs should only be used by the Repair Dept. to deal with special complaints which cannot otherwise be satisfied.
