EFC. {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} WA. {Mr Wallis} 119. 23.3.25. WATFORD MAGNETO No. 73972. RETURNED FROM MESSRS. NORTH'S This magneto was sent to North's as being excessively noisy, especially the sleeves (see report WA. {Mr Wallis} 108). They agreed that the machine was noisy and have located the sleeves better and also fitted a bakelite pinion to the armature. We have tested this magneto and although it is certainly better as regards noise, there are still one or two points which we suggest would improve the quietness. Firstly the gears which before returning were fairly quiet, do not appear to be meshing relatively correct, presumably this is due to the fitting of a new pinion, and is not considered serious. Secondly, there is an end play of .010" between the cam ring and end bracket, which we specify should be a close fit. This has the effect of allowing the cam only ring and sleeve assembly to float end-ways, which is not considered conducive to the general quietness of the machine. The sleeves are much quieter than before and this magneto is now considered to be in a satisfactory condition, as regards quietness, for use on a chassis. EFC {E.
