Dear Mr. Robotham, I am sorry I have been so long in replying to your letter dated July 18th. in which you have asked me to let you have further information with regard to cylinder liners. You say that although we have discussed chromium plating from time to time you have not yourself a very clear idea of what you feel about this procedure for production engines. We ourselves are in the same difficulty, insofar that unless we can see our way to bring this chromium plating process on a production basis, then obviously it is no use proceeding with the job at all. We have at the present time instituted some experimental work on chromium plating and we should have sufficient information in about 4/6 weeks time to enable us to come to some definite conclusion as to how far we should commit ourselves on this process. I can only advise you that, out of the large number of cylinder blocks we have had treated by the van der Horst process, the results on petrol engines were extremely good, and we do not have any material trouble in effecting ring bed or obtaining satisfactory oil consumption figures. We ourselves carried out some experimental work on cylinder liners some time ago, but unfortunately the results obtained from tests with different forms of liner are not always consistent, but it would appear that the phosphor- | ||
